Tip. Think of the person; be original when trying to determine what will make him/her happy.
An excellent gift does not have to be expensive at all. But to give an appropriate gift, you must consider the recipient. Try to discover all about the person. Tastes in food, music and recreation are all very personal choices. Once you have an overall picture of this person, then you can decide what gift would make him/her happy. By finding out what that person likes, you can amaze him/her with a very thoughtful gift.
Some people have very specific tastes in music, down to the exact name and song group of a CD they has been trying to get hold of. Knowing that, you would know exactly what would make them smile. You might have to do some Internet research to get the item, or travel a little, but the end result would be well worth it.
Some like antiques and homemade items. Someone with a knack for picking out bargains at an antique shop could really find that unique gift. You could also make or buy a beautifully individualized item that they could not purchased themselves.
Some people love to eat sweets. If you have a knack for cooking, you could prepare their favourite cookies in a container/jar specifically chosen for them.
Some people just enjoy the spotlight. Perhaps you could go to the workplace to sing a song/recite a poem that is meaningful to him/her. Not talented? Hire someone.
What about a loved one? The packaging is part of the excitement. Maybe you could sprinkle flower petals all the way to the bedroom with a huge box wrapped in gold or silver foil. As the recipient unwraps the box, he/she will have to unwrap additional boxes inside to get to the real gift. Then, make sure that you have something of sentimental value in that last box. It doesn't have to be a diamond.
Funny gifts can even be a success. I know a friend who wanted a red truck for his birthday. So, my husband made him a cake with an iced road on top, and placed a red toy truck on top. To this day, it brings back fond memories and a good laugh.
Think about the other person. Don't just wait until the last minute, throw down a ton of money, just to buy "anything" that shows you spent money. Be considerate. Think about what would be fun and appropriate. Then, go for it! Your heart will thank you as well as the recipient.
