Tips on Gift Wrapping

So you finally found and bought the Presents for your friends, family or other. Of course we all know, 'It's the thought that counts'.

But it doesn't take that much effort or expensive show that you really care by taking the time to wrap your presents beautifully.

Here are some great tips and simple ideas to help you make your gifts look eye-catching and original.

Find a hard flat surface to work on, ie table. This will make it easier to wrap and result in neater folds. Assemble all the equipment you will need together, i.e. presents, paper, scissors, tape, ribbon, glue stick ....etc. Keep equipment within reach, you can also cut lengths of tape first to save time. Try not to use too much paper, as this will make it difficult to create neat folds. Keep the paper tight and crease the edges firmly. Keep your present in the centre of the sheet of paper; this will result in symmetrical folds and edges.

Once you have decided how you are going to wrap which presents, you are ready to begin

How to measure out the paper

Length - Place the gift 2 inches from the edge of the paper; roll the gift along the paper till you meet the edge of the gift where you began. This will give you enough paper to go all the way around the box plus 2 inches for taping.

Width - The width of the paper should be no less than the width of the gift plus the height of the gift. The paper needs to go at least half way up the two sides of the gift. Anymore and it will get messy.

Start Wrapping

Place the gift upside-down in the centre of the paper.
Bring up the two long sides of paper, and tape in place. Try to keep the join in the middle.
Keep the half wrapped gift upside down.
Fold down the top pieces of paper and crease along the diagonal edge on both sides.
Fold the two side pieces in towards the middle. Crease along the diagonal edges on the bottom piece.
Fold up the bottom piece and tape in place.
Repeat process on the other end.

Some imaginative wrapping/presentation ideas

Show how much thought you've put into their gift before they even get it open.

Gift boxes: Purchase a gift box, bigger than your gift, if you have more than one gift to the same person, individually wrap the in tissue/crepe paper, maybe even tie them with a ribbon, place then in the box, tie with a ribbon and/or add a bow. That way you can give a beautifully presented gift, once opened, ten recipient will have many gifts still to open, making the gift opening experience prolonged and exciting.

Lei Decorated Present (Rainbow Leis, available from Sillyjokes, Hula Rainbow Leis are used to mark special occasions in Hawaii).
Break up a rainbow lei, and using a glue stick, either stick individual flowers on the outside of the gift or build up the colours, by placing different coloured flowers on top of each other.

Confetti sprinkles wrapped gift, to brighten up any plain colour wrapping, stick some confetti to the paper once wrapped. If using tissue wrap, use two or more layers and sprinkle some confetti in-between the layers as well. Not only with the wrapped gift look lovely, but when it is ripped open there will be a cascade of brightly coloured confetti pieces. Don't forget to put some in the card as well.

Creepy Critters wrapped gift, a variation of the above method - more for the boys.
As with the confetti, use more than one layer of tissue wrap. Sprinkle a few small creepy critters or other spiders between the layers when wrapping and stick some on the outside when finished. Or, just stick on the outside of any gift. Have a look at Sillyjokes for their critters section.

Jagged Stripes wrapped gift, wrap the gift in two separate colours. Carefully rip through the top layer to reveal the colour below. Red over orange for flames, white over black for zebra stripes, you can use any colours or just different shades of the same colour.

Other Ideas you may wish to think about

Utilize a large piece of brown/or any other colour paper, you could cut-out appropiate pictures from a magazine and stick them on the paper ie if they are a football fan, cut out the logo, photos of players and headlines refering to major results and stick them ramdomly on, to make a novel wrap. If they like a particular band/singer, cut out such images, if they are a teacher, images of stationary items, doctor/nurse, pictures of medical items found in adverts or on the internet etc...the list is endless

Use an old calendar, for wrapping watches or clocks.
The Sunday Comics.
A personalized picture or artwork created on your computer.
White paper personally decorated with colouring pencils or crayons.
Colored plastic wrap.
Enlarged photocopy of a photograph.
Get the kids to decorate a large peice of paper.
If you can find any old movie posters.
Pages from an old computer magazine, for computer or gadget items.

Instead of decorating the wrapped gift with a bow, cut out a large pictures to dorn it as you wish, ie a skull for a Goth friend, a picture of a computer for your average geek, flowers for women generally, blackboard with message for a teacher etc...

If your lucky enough to have a clipart dvd, your in business, otherwise start collecting old magazines or go to Amazon and get one.

In conclusion, remember that the important thing is not what you give, or how you wrap it.
